Abstract

Teacher job satisfaction is a critical factor in educational service quality, yet few quantitative studies simultaneously examine the effects of leadership and work stress on private junior high school teachers. This study aimed to analyze the direct effect of school principal leadership on teacher job satisfaction, the direct effect of work stress on teacher job satisfaction, the direct effect of leadership on work stress, and the indirect effect of leadership on job satisfaction through work stress among private junior high school teachers in East Jakarta. A quantitative survey method with path analysis was employed. A sample of 100 teachers private junior high schools across four sub-districts in East Jakarta was obtained through multistage proportional random sampling. Results showed that leadership had a positive direct effect on job satisfaction (? = 0.467; t = 5.912; p = 0.000), work stress had a negative direct effect on job satisfaction (? = ?0.367; t = ?4.632; p = 0.000), and leadership had a negative direct effect on work stress (? = ?0.500; t = ?5.715; p = 0.000). The indirect effect of leadership on job satisfaction through work stress was 0.184. Leadership and work stress simultaneously explained 52.4% of the variation in teacher job satisfaction. It is concluded that school principal leadership plays a dual role: directly enhancing job satisfaction and reducing work stress, which in turn further increases teacher job satisfaction.
